Tailor Your Own Cabinet Supply Chain

Monday, January 10th, 2011

To some builder, a conventional process of buy kitchen cabinets is to go to a retail store, get measurements, weigh your options and then eventually pay too much for your kitchen cabinets. There is a good reason for people to optimize their cabinets supply. A new way to buy kitchen cabinets and get a better constructed cabinet, at a better price awaits you. The problem is, it might take some research and effort on your part.

One feature that is well liked in any rental unit or house for that matter is the kitchen. It is usually the first room entered and it is also a good place for a first impression. What people look at in a kitchen are the kitchen cabinets. Yes renters look at the appliances, but the most noticeable part of a kitchen are the cabinets. As with a home buyer, the next more noticable feature that stands out is the bathroom or bathrooms. But how to get a competitive price cabinet? Let’s analyze what factor composed cabinetry cost and what a “low cost cabinet” can be. IMHO, the main cost include design, production and logistics. Usually people won’t expect to sacrifice quality for a low cost while design and production decided the final quality. So, try to find a local manufacturer? One of the good choice but not always good considering the balance of the two most important factors. Optimize your design and production configuration. One of practical and classic combination would be, designning locally so as to access to market and producing by some well organized and economic production souce-China often become a main option. (The second part is exactly what I’m doing.) Of course this way can cost more logistic cost. That’s somewhere subtile and need us to ponder a bit. When you get a best balance, you get your best choise. Different people may choose different way to have a cost down. Just to be certain about your way.

So the next move is to go around and check out a RTA cabinet source. Interested in finding secret of a optimized cabinet supply chain? Follow these links to find out the secret to getting RTA Kitchen cabinets at competitive price: http://chinartacab.weebly.com

Tips For Cleaning Wooden Kitchen Cabinets

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Cleaning wood kitchen cabinets is not a difficult work, actually,  it just takes some time and a little elbow grease. To clean wooden kitchen cabinets of any quality, you will need soft cloth, water and mild soap. Wash your cabinets in a gentle way. Make sure that you do not leave any water on the wood surface of your cabinet.

You can put lemon oil on your wooden kitchen cabinets if they are looking a bit dull to you. Before you do that, remember the point that putting lemon oil on your cabinet can create some issues at the time of refinishing because oil will be there in the wood surface. It has been noticed that lacquer and conversion finishes dry very quickly. The only limitation being that they don’t cure for around six months. Therefore, putting lemon oil on lacquer and conversion finish is not advisable.

It’s always better to clean your wooden kitchen cabinets with a high quality furniture polish when you are washing cabinet with soap and water. Use of too much water can have a negative impact on the finishing, more so if it’s not wiped up fast. Use of mild soap such as Ivory and Murphy’s Oil Soap is recommended in cleaning wooden kitchen cabinets. Both of these soaps are quite gentle in nature so it will not be harmful for wood. Another good thing about these soaps is that no oil or lye is left in the finished product.

Some useful tips from Merillat cabinets

Wood Finishes
Dusting
Dust cabinets frequently with a soft lint-free cloth. You can dampen the cloth slightly with water or a spray-type dust remover.

Spills
Clean spills immediately. Use a clean cloth and mild soap if necessary. Wipe dry with a clean soft cloth.

Cleaning
There are a number of products available for your wood cleaning needs. We recommend Guardsman. Their products are available at many stores nationwide, including Bed Bath & Beyond, Wal-Mart and Ace Hardware. A more economical way to remove grease build-up from cabinets is to use Fantastik. Apply and remove quickly, then wash your cabinets with a mild soap. After washing, dry thoroughly and apply a silicone-free polish.

Polishing
We recommend that you wash and polish cabinets once or twice each year. Use a light coat of quality furniture polish.

Don’s
Never use detergents, soap pads, or steel wool on your cabinetry. These harsh abrasives will mar the wood finish. Additionally, we recommend that you avoid the use of paste wax and polishes that contain silicone; the wax build up is difficult to remove and will leave a residue that attracts dust.

Kitchen Cabinet Doors Wood Species Description

Friday, March 6th, 2009

When choosing new kitchen cabinets or replace kitchen cabinet doors, it is important to consider the type of wood species that you will use. Below is the list of common woods available today in kitchen cabinet doors:

Alder – Very similar grain pattern to Cherry and Maple. Considered to be a hardwood but beware. Alder is light in weight and will dent easily, so you must be careful with it. It takes most finishes well including the dark ones.

Pine: Features swirling grain and random knots. Used in its natural state, pine lends itself to a lodge/cabin feel.

Cherry – Smooth even grained hardwood with a very elegant warm look. Have some variations with some blond, green and gray strips. Cherry darkens with age especially when exposed to direct sunlight. May contain small knots and pin holes.

Maple – Smooth, even and fine grain.  is more uniformed and could have slight variations with mineral streaks which are common. Harder wood that is more wear resistant than birch.

Oak – Very strong grain pattern. Noticeable variations in color. Oak is one of the stronger hardwoods.

Pecan – A stronger hardwood from the hickory family. Very dramatic color variations when new that will become less apparent with age. Will have knots and pin holes.

Quarter-Sawn Oak – Straight grain with medium to coarse texture and evenly spaced pores. White Oak that ranges in color from nearly white to dark gray heartwood. Quarter-sawn Oak is cut using the heart of the wood as the edge rather than the center which create a rich look. Heavy, hard, strong and durable.

Birch: Featuring dramatic color variation, smooth grain and dramatic color and shade variation, birch is light in weight but strong. A popular choice due to it’s similarity to maple, but less expensive than maple. Birch works well in any type of setting.. (part from Wood Species Characteristics)

More tips

Kitchens tend to be affected by humidity and temperature and your cabinets need to adjust to such changes in temperature. Solid wood often expands and contracts when exposed to such humidity, leading to warping. It may be a good idea to consider using hardwood veneer and laminate alternatives.

Hardwood veneer is a thin piece of solid wood that is typically applied to plywood or particleboard with glue to give it strength. It cost less than solid wood, its uniform in finish and its grain is very consistent. Using wood veneer in cabinet doors provides constancy by minimizing its shrinking and expansion in climate changes which ultimately eliminates cracking and splitting. Also, a stain can be added to blend doors to the rest of the cabinet structure.
