The kitchen is a part of the open plan – but is still partly hidden in two niches allowing the occupants of the house to be able to work on preparing food without the clutter being exposed to their guests. This structure has also left room to build in an oven, ventilation, fridge and storage as an integrated part of the architecture. We are planning a proper kitchen remodel (out with the ’90s MDF cabinets, in with nice wooden ones), but while waiting for that, I wanted to cheer up the boring white and brown kitchen. My husband removed some of the upper cabinet doors, so we got open shelves. I painted the cabinets pink and turquoise with a little cloudy theme. The choice of yellow adds to that liveliness. Adding a rectangular plank to the island and attaching some legs is an affordable and relatively easy solution. Tie it in with matching colored trim, and viola – extra function.
