Charming Traditional Farmhouse Kitchens

via: www.elledecor.com Photographer: William Waldron

“Leslie Tung, of the home-furnishings shop Mitu Atelier, and her husband, architect Gerard McCormack, renovated a kitchen in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, that is imbued with a sense of rustic, international flair. The walls are sheathed in Talavera tiles, the floor is paved with stained brick tiles, and the antique farmhouse-style table is surrounded by Casamidy chairs, which are upholstered in a linen by Mitu Atelier.”

Elegant Traditional Grey-Green Kitchen

modern classic green kitchen

Dark grey-green kitchen from Errez Design, elegant color and modern traditional design.

I wanted to share some images of a kitchen we just renovated in Miami, FL. This kitchen was designed for a fun creative guy who loves rock and roll and gourmet food. We wanted to make the kitchen feel like it belonged in a 1930′s house but still pop with bold colors and edgy patterns. We used a yellow and grey geometric wallpaper from Jonathan Adler on the ceiling. The yellow tones are also found on the hardwood floors. Classic charcoal grey cabinetry was paired with white marble and white ceramic tile for contrast. Vintage library lamps illuminate the open aluminum shelving. What a fun, bold kitchen! Errez Design via

Removing kitchen Tile Tips

Removing kitchen Tile Tips

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Kitchen improment always needs removing tiles, it is not difficult, but different kind of tiles needs differnt way, here are some tips to help you do your work.

Vinyl Tiles
In order to remove vinyl flooring, you will have to start at a seam. Take your long handle scraper and push it underneath the seam, at about a 45 degree angle. Now, try to pry it upwards. In case it does not come off easily, use a heat gun and loosen the glue. After the flooring has been removed, use the drywall knife to scrape up the remaining bits of glue. Finally, clean the surface with the help of soapy water and your scraper.

Linoleum Tiles
In case of linoleum tiles, you will be required to start by removing the baseboards. The utility knife will come to your rescue. Keeping your pulling hand as close as possible to the vinyl, start at one end, ripping the tile as you go. For removing the ripped off pieces of the tiles as well as any residual glue, sheetrock knife will come handy. Finally, clean the surface thoroughly and wash with the help of soapy water.

Ceramic Tiles
In case you have used ceramic tiles in your kitchen, you will have to first remove moldings and plumbing fixtures, if any. Now, wear safety glasses as loose tile fragments might hit you. Take a masonry chisel and tap it underneath a tile at the grout with a mallet. After the tile comes off, clean off any remaining grout and sand, with the help of a long handled floor scraper. Smooth the surface with a belt sander and clean with mop and warm water.

Tile Backsplash
In case it is a tile backsplash that you want to remove, start by using a hammer to make a sharp tap on the middle tile. After the tile breaks, use a flat screwdriver to pry out its pieces. After majority of the tile comes off, shimmy a heavy duty putty knife under the other tiles and lift them out. The tiles will come out easily. If any tile refuses to come off, soak it in sudsy water and remove the adhesive. Then, pry it gently. After all the tiles are removed, clean the surface thoroughly. (via)

Single Tile

If you are only removing one wall tile, then you will have to make sure that you are very careful. After all, you do not want to break or chip the other tiles around it. This will be easier to do if the grout is a little bit older, because then it will have lost some of its initial strength. The hardest part of removing the tile is that you are going to need to remove the grout first. If the tile was already out, you could just chisel the grout.

The easiest way to get rid of grout between tiles is to use a handheld grinder with a special small head. This way, you can just grind the grout out from between the tiles. Additionally, since you can use different settings on the grinder, you will not have to worry about breaking the tiles.

Just go slow when you are first starting, and when you are near the tile edges. Make sure that you are careful not to damage the other tiles when removing wall tiles as they are fairly difficult to replace – it’s best if you only have to replace one or two.

Careful Not to Break the Tile

Once the grout has been removed around the edges of the wall tile, you can start removing the tile itself. All you have to do in order to do that is to put something very thin between the tile and the wall behind it. While you will be popping the tile off of the wall, you need to be careful not to exert too much force, otherwise you may just end up breaking the tile more than it was already.

Removing wall tiles will require that you try to remove as much of the adhesive behind the tile before you pull it off. You can do this by sliding your thin tool behind the tile until there is not much holding the tile to the wall. Then it should just pop right off of the wall.

Removing Multiple Tiles

If you are going to be removing wall tiles from an entire area of your home, then you should still be careful, but it will not be as difficult as just removing one tile. However, it will be pretty time consuming. A few things to keep in mind are that you will need to remove as much of the grout as is possible before you start pulling the tiles off.

Tiles Can be Reused

Second, when removing wall tiles from a section of wall, you should still be somewhat careful so that you do not break the tiles too much. The reason for this is that if you break the tiles, they will just be harder to get off the wall. Additionally, if you can keep the tiles intact, you might be able to use them again later. (Via)
