clean and classic small kitchen

Kate’s kitchen remains 1930s original: crisp, clean and classic with its red stripe and white tiles. The retro fabric adds color and personality and matches her collection of Le Creuset cookware. In the dining room, Kate went with a bold navy color for the wall, and she brightens up the room with pink curtains and a playful rug. The rest of her apartment is equally fun — so many beautiful patterns and colors! — Lauren via

kitchen remodel, cute kitchen

We are planning a proper kitchen remodel (out with the ’90s MDF cabinets, in with nice wooden ones), but while waiting for that, I wanted to cheer up the boring white and brown kitchen. My husband removed some of the upper cabinet doors, so we got open shelves. I painted the cabinets pink and turquoise with a little cloudy theme. The paint is Tikkurila Empire, pink is color 9721 and turquoise is K370. Illustrator Jutta Rikola of Kootut Murut ‘s kitchen.  via

Want a quick kitchen update but don’t want to spend a lot? “Just updating the cabinet pulls can be a major transformation for very little money,” says Jeff Lewis.

Remove Rugs

Remove Rugs
“I’m not a carpet guy. I love the solid floors, wood or stone, with area rugs because I can lift them up and clean underneath,” says Jeff Lewis.

A Contemporary Kitchen

A Contemporary Kitchen
“It’s a contemporary kitchen, the most contemporary kitchen so far for Kitchen of the Year,” says Jeff Lewis. “It’s definitely California modern. It has a tremendous amount of glass and natural light. We put in as many doors and windows as possible.”

Sleek Open Shelving
“If you overbuild the cabinets, I think it makes it seem claustrophobic,” says Jeff Lewis. “Open shelves or glass doors on the uppers and lowers really help a space look better.”

Smart Storage

Smart Storage
Forget about that cluttered catchall drawer. Drawer dividers make organizing kitchen tools easy — no more hunting for the wine opener.

A Convenient Island Cooktop

A Convenient Island Cooktop
An island cooktop uses a filter to eliminate smoke so that overhead vents aren’t necessary. The location also lets the cook chat easily with family and guests seated at nearby bar stools.
